Genre

Genre in simple terms can be described as the category of writing you are writing in. The genres we used in “writing for engineering” include a memo, a technical description, a lab report, and a proposal.

Before the class, when I thought of genre I thought of things like fiction, nonfiction, drama, etc. Although these are categories of genres, these are not the genres we use while writing for engineers. The reason I probably thought of those genres was that I was used to different types of English classes that didn’t include technical writing. This class did a great job of explaining why certain genres should be used. An example would be how when we did the assignment on issuing a complaint about something on campus. We knew that the most optimal genre to use would be memo because the memo would probably be sent as an email, and it would be easy to read quickly.

At the end of the Semester I now view the genre in a different light. I think of it way more than before when it comes to my writing process.
